Christian Ministry: Where Work and Faith Merge

Posted by Janice Chapman on Mar 29, 2017 11:00:40 AM

As Christians our most essential ministry is our devotion to God; however, often times we find it hard to put God first when our responsibilities of the day-to-day interject. Long hours at work, family care and personal well being can put constraints on our time and make it difficult to tend to our most important work. If you feel called to a career in Christian Ministry, now is the time to pursue your dream.

Use your time and talents wisely.  Choose a ministry that coincides with your passions in life.

James Westbrook, a Missouri Baptist Alum, is a shining example of how one can merge ministry with a career. While he was Director of Job and Leadership Training at Mission St Louis, he combined his career with his faith. Westbrook worked with young men who had recently been released from prison to help give them a chance to find jobs that pay a living wage, along with resources to get back on their feet. Through his position, Westbrook helped to break the cycle of incarceration while fulfilling his ministry each day through his passion — his work.

A Career in Ministry

For devotional needs that go beyond blending ministry into your personal time, consider turning your ministry into your career.

Christian Ministry degrees enable you to bring your faith directly to every aspect of your life.  Through majors, minors and certificates, theological studies help develop Christ-like leaders giving you the option of blending your ministry with your workday. Rather than working at your job for 40 hours each week and then attending to your ministry and your family in the time leftover, a career in Christian ministry allows you to be a Christ-like influence, both at work and beyond.

With a degree based in Christian theology, such as the Online Bachelors of Science in Ministry and Leadership, you can seek a career that aligns more with you fulfilling your purpose of spreading and sharing God’s message and living His scripture. Your career options might include: pastor, missionary, bible teacher, ministry worker or church worker.

Ministry Comes in Many Forms

Could your calling be to organize the church softball team or coach youth soccer? Have you given thought to teaching Sunday school in order to spend more time with your children or perhaps, lead a Bible study class or faith in marriage class with your husband or wife? Prayer, reading the scriptures, daily devotion and attending weekly services with your family takes little time, but has a large impact on your spiritual life. Find the right venue for you to dedicate to God and you’ll find a more fulfilling and rewarding experience for both you, your family and members of your community.

As Christians, we are called to lead a life of service; to dig deep and discover our God-given passions and share those with others. At Missouri Baptist, we call this the challenge to Shine On.
